Etsy Title Character Limit: The 140 Cap Explained

A listing title can be 140 characters. Etsy also publishes a 15-word suggestion, a 50-60 character search-engine window, and a Seller Handbook suggestion of about 40 characters or less for ads. The shop title is 55. The shop name is 20.

Bar chart of the Etsy title character limit. Five horizontal bars show a 140-character listing title cap, a 50-60 character search-engine window drawn at 60, a 55-character shop title, a 40-character ads suggestion, and a 20-character shop name. The source line reads Etsy Help and Seller Handbook, checked Oct 28, 2026.

Etsy publishes four title lengths; only the 140 on the create-listing page is a hard cap. Search engines show the first 50 to 60 characters of the page title, and Etsy’s Seller Handbook ads checklist suggests ideally 40 characters or less. The shop title cap is 55 characters. The shop name cap is 20. As of October 28, 2026.

Compiled from Etsy Help pages checked October 28, 2026; we did not upload test listings. The 40-character suggestion is from an Etsy Seller Handbook checklist. The allowed-character rule below is from Etsy’s Open API documentation.

Where each number comes from

The chart above draws these lengths with the shop fields. Checked Oct 28, 2026.

These pages do not publish a hard word cap. “Less than 15 words” is writing advice. The 50 to 60 characters are what the SEO page says search engines show of the page title, which Etsy builds from the item title. The 40-character figure is an ads checklist suggestion: lead with the most relevant keywords, and avoid all uppercase. The create-listing page and the SEO page do not state a cutoff for titles inside Etsy search. Put color, material, and size first so the visible part names the item.

Shop title and shop name are separate caps

The caps belong to different fields. Checked Oct 28, 2026.

The shop title cap is 55 characters. Etsy says you can preview that line in Google results while you edit it, and that the shop has to be open first. The shop name is the 20-character field in the shop address.

Characters the Open API allows in a title

Etsy’s Open API documentation for createDraftListing says a valid title contains only letters, numbers, punctuation, mathematical symbols, whitespace, and the marks ™, ©, and ®. The characters %, :, & and + may be used once each. That is an API documentation rule. The listing form on the website may phrase an error differently. Etsy Help’s create-listing page does not list these character rules.

The create-listing Help page adds rules about the words. Avoid repetition. Avoid subjective words, and Etsy’s example is “perfect”. Leave price and shipping out of the title; the price goes in its own field, worked out in how to price handmade items on Etsy. Include a holiday, a special occasion, or a recipient type only when it is essential to what the item is. Etsy’s example of an essential case is “Halloween costume”.

Tag length is a separate question, answered in how many tags an Etsy listing can have.

The listing URL is fixed at first publish

The create-listing Help page says the listing’s unique URL is based on the title you enter the first time you publish. After that, the URL does not change when you edit the title. The SEO page says the same thing, and says the URL has less impact on SEO than the listing title and the rest of the listing.

The visible title can still change. The address stays the one built from the first title, so it can keep that original wording, and a link that already used the address still names it. For a major change to the item, Etsy says to consider a new listing so the URL matches what you sell. Copying a listing, on the bulk edit Help page, creates a new listing with a new URL. Titles are also one of the fields that bulk-edit tool can change across many listings at once.

One plate title cut to each official window

The strings below are an example for a speckled stoneware dinner plate. Counts include spaces and punctuation. This string was not uploaded as a listing.

The full line is 130 characters and 19 words: under the cap, past the 15-word suggestion. Size, color, and material sit inside the first 60 characters. The SEO page names color, material, and size as traits to put up front. “For one guest” is a recipient phrase, and Etsy says to include a recipient only when it is essential. A dinner plate does not need it. The 60-character cut ends on “finish”. The 50-character cut splits “matte”. The 40-character cut still names the plate and the size. Fourteen words still use 97 characters, past the search-engine window and the 40-character ads suggestion.

Write toward the 140-character cap on the listing title. Put the identifying traits in the first 50 to 60 characters that search engines show, and, if you plan to advertise, Etsy’s Seller Handbook suggests keeping the title to about 40 characters or less. Keep the 55-character shop title and the 20-character shop name on the shop.

FAQ

Will Etsy reject a title that is under 140 characters and over 15 words?

The create-listing Help page puts “up to 140 characters” and “consider using less than 15 words” in the same title instructions. It does not say the form refuses a title that stays inside 140 characters and runs past 15 words. Treat 140 characters as the cap, and the word line as reading guidance.

Does editing a listing title cost a listing fee?

The create-listing Help page says you can edit all parts of a listing at any time, and that there is no cost to edit a listing. A title change on a listing already published is that kind of edit. A new listing, which Etsy suggests when the item has changed enough to need a matching URL, is a separate action.

How many times can I change my shop name, and does the URL change?

Once the shop is open, the shop-name Help page allows up to five name changes in Your shop settings; capitalization updates and returning to a previous name do not count, and a further change needs Etsy Support. The shop URL changes with the new name, links to the previous name redirect, and other sellers cannot take that previous name.
